Professor Robert Hawkins
After medical school at Cambridge University and University College London, Professor Hawkins trained in Medical Oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and obtained a PhD in antibody engineering at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge before moving to his current post as Professor of Medical Oncology at the Christie Hospital in 1998. His main clinical interests are in renal/adrenal cancers, focusing on immunotherapy as a treatment for cancer. Professor Hawkins leads the Christie Renal Oncology Service and undertakes a large number of clinical trials. A particular specialty is the delivery of high dose interleukin-2 as a potentially curative treatment for selected patients with renal cancer.
He also undertakes Phase I/II trials of immune and other biological therapies in a wider range of cancers including gastrointestinal cancers, melanoma and B cell lymphomas as well as renal cancers. Adoptive cellular therapy is the major translational research interest of Professor Hawkins who leads the EU ATTRACT training network (www.attack-cancer.org), which links leading European researchers in the engineered T-cell field. He has established a specialist Cellular Therapy Laboratory Unit in Manchester, which currently supports trials/treatments of cellular therapy for B-cell malignancies and melanoma. He also leads the EU ATTACK clinical trial consortium that will undertake trials of cell therapy for oesophago-gastric cancer and melanoma. He has published widely on clinical/translational cancer research and is on several national and international clinical/translational research committees.
