Pseudomyxoma Peritonei

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare cancer of the appendix. It usually begins with an adenoma (like a polyp) which grows slowly, spreading along the lining of the abdominal cavity rather than through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. It usually stays within the abdomen and produces a mucus that collects in the peritoneum (abdominal lining) and causes symptoms which may not become apparent for several years.

Symptoms may include:

  • A slow increase in waist size
  • Hernia (a swelling on the abdomen)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Appendicitis
